New Desk & Decor

3/25/2016
By Catherine Ratliff

I do! I did! I will do!
Past! Present! Future!

These are the three tenses of my story.

My new desk shipment arrived from Target. It's a white Classic Parsons desk with an aquamarine blue drawer. I chose white because it is a fresh color; one in which I always refrained from using. The fact is that the color white and I have had a bad history. I go from spilling gravy to meat sauce to coffee on a crisp white shirt. Imagine what I would do to a white sofa or white desk.

Well, times are changing. I'm learning to embrace and live on the edge. I bought my new desk online for around $53.00. It was delivered in only a few days. I had to shift a few things around as I prepped for my yard sale. This will be my very first ever. That's a whole other story.

So, I am decorating my plain white desk top with rich blues, some greens, and oranges. It's a work in progress since I plan on incorporating more of these favorites colors in the vicinity with wall decor. I'm leaning toward wall tapestry, in which I may make myself or order from India. Artist in India make the best tapestry. My plan is to incorporate more oranges in the mix.

I relocated my glass vase with the blue beads and long-stemmed faux florals, that I originally stored in my window sill, to the edge of my desk. I figured it would work better in the middle of things. I put some plastic greenery, ranging in price of $2.99 -$4.99 at Target, to embellish just alongside a beautiful blue picture frame. The frame was purchased from Savers, a thrift store, here in New England. It costed $2.99.

The blue lamp was found on clearance for $4.98. I actually waited two days until it was reduced from $7.98. That was not planned. I was just being indecisive. It paid off. This lamp is pretty neat whereas it has an extra outlet and USB port attached to the base. Bravo! In the base I put two sanitizers: blue and yellow. I chose these colors to help pop the rest of the colors on the desk. Plus, my  hands will stay clean.

Both candles are from the Signature Soy Collection. 4 oz. $5.00 each. They can burn up to 20 hours. But, I would never burn them that long. One should have a soothing aroma to entice creativity at her desk. The orange candle is called Paradise Passion. If you close your eyes while sniffing, you could imagine yourself on a white sands beach, with bonfires going and soft music playing as the waves crash upon the shore.

The blue candle is called Lush Amazon. I imagine myself sitting at a mountain top with fresh wild flowers in my hair and my toes dangling from a cliff. There's a parrot of exotic vibrant colors perched on my shoulder. He is speaking to me, "How ya feeling?" Okay, I'm going overboard. Not literally, I hope. But, that's how good it smells. I'm too afraid of heights to have my feel dangling from a cliff. *Smile* The candles' jar designs of blues, oranges, and golds, compliment the overall color scheme of the desk.

The other collectibles of the desk consist of a white pale which hold my blue pens $1.99 at Target (will paint patterns on it), a dancing solar-powered ladybug figurine $2.99 at CVS, a miniature zebra $2.99 at Target, my laptop that I covered in zebra printed contact paper. I bought the roll a while back at a Walmart. The rolls go a long way. Of course, my 10th year company anniversary (Chelsea) clock sits at the back of the desk. It is a very heavy and bulky clock. it weighs at a guesstimate of 5 lbs. Last but not least, a few office supplies from Dollar Tree is only fitting if you are gonna get some serious work done: matching blue notebooks, stapler and in-desk calculator and stationary inside the desk.

So, I'm charging my phone in the new lamp and it charges pretty fast. Beautiful. Well, check out the pictures. I hope this gives you some inspiration on how to decorate your desk. And...if you don't have a desk....well, go buy one.....and then go decorate it.

Phase one: complete

PF Chang's

I ate out at PF Chang's with a friend this past weekend. The food was delicious. This restaurant is located in downtown Providence, Rhode Island in the mall complex. It is a perfect location for tourist when they visit. They are going to get really good business during the Waterfire Celebrations Providence hosts a few times a year. For those of you who don't know what Waterfire is....it is when art lovers or hopeless romantics from all over come through to watch the gondolas pass in the Providence River, visit local art museums and galleries, sit outside and dine at fine restaurants, etc. So since PF Chang's establishment arrived, I think it will add some extra cuisine to the already fabulous selections downtown. I grew to love PF Chang's for the first time when I visited Atlantic City, New Jersey. I went there many times when I lived in New Jersey and still frequent it now that I live in Rhode Island. I can't get enough of AC....

Rise and Shine

This was my breakfast this morning. I got tired of the traditional bagel or the two slices of white toast with peanut butter that seemed to become the norm. I was in the market early in the morning looking for a change; a new flavor to stimulate my palate and at the same time fill my body with essential vitamins and minerals. I'm not so ready to jump buildings in single bounds but this good choice of breakfast helped me tackle my eventful day. I will just leave the tall leaps and metal bending for Clark Kent (S-man).

Helping Out the Next Guy!

I won't provide any visuals on today's blog. I just wanted to keep it anonymous. I helped out a stranger today. I was amongst a group of able bodies who could have extended a hand but ignored the choice. It wasn't a major issue but I felt the need to act. I visited a government office today. It was a rainy day. Since the building was not yet open a line of rain-drenched people stood out in front, waiting feverishly to be let inside. I saw this line from afar as I parked my vehicle. My vehicle was warm and acted as a great shield from the rain. Most people had umbrellas or wore hoodied jackets. I guess they were as prepared for the rain than they will ever be. However, what caught my attention was a gentlemen hovering on the other side of the doors. He chose to cower on the other side of the building to avoid the wet wind that flowed from behind the backs of those who waited in line. He wore no jacket and he had no umbrella. At first, I almost mumbled to myself, "How...
